How to Have Better Fingerprints for Live Scan

A few simple preparation steps can make electronic fingerprint capture easier, especially if your hands tend to be very dry, worn or difficult to scan.

Fingerprint Quality

Simple Ways to Improve Live Scan Capture

Keep Skin From Getting Too Dry

Very dry or cracked fingertips can make ridge detail harder to capture. Normal hand moisturizer in the days before your appointment may help, but avoid heavy lotion immediately before scanning.

Keep Fingers Clean and Dry

Oil, moisture, dirt and residue can interfere with a clean electronic image. Wash normally and make sure your fingers are dry before the scan begins.

Warm Up Cold Hands

Cold fingers can be harder to scan well. If your hands are cold, warming them gently before the appointment may help the scanner capture clearer ridge detail.

At the Appointment

Let the Live Scan Operator Guide the Capture

The operator will position each finger and may repeat individual prints if the system flags image quality. Do not press harder unless instructed; too much pressure can flatten ridge detail.

People who work heavily with their hands, have worn fingerprints, scars or very dry skin may need extra attempts. That does not necessarily mean the fingerprints cannot be captured.
